LC Women's Soccer Vanquishes Sewanee 4-0
LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College women's soccer team opened play in the Shellenberger Classic with a 4-0 victory over visiting Sewanee: The University of the South in a game mired by heavy rainfall in the first half from Tropical Storm Hanna.
The first stanza was a defensive struggle as both teams went into intermission scoreless despite several scoring opportunities on each end of the field. The rain stopped pouring in during intermission, and the Hornets opened the gates, scoring four goals after half-time to win. Joanie Snyder (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) opened the scoring at the 53:38 mark, deflecting the ball off the goalie and into the net from a Brittany Klippstein (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) pass. Ashley Hoath (Alexandria, VA/Mount Vernon) added another goal on an open net at 65:39 off a feed from Betsy Kwiatkowski (Mount Jackson, VA/Stonewall Jackson). Katie Santos (Cheltenham, MD/Bishop Ireton) tacked on the third goal at 76:45 with an assist from Cecilia Moore (Washington DC/Woodrow Wilson), and Klippstein added a goal for herself, this time assisted by Shawn Jackson (Virginia Beach, VA/Floyd E. Kellam), shortly before the end of the game.
Lynchburg (3-0) returns to the field tomorrow in the Shellenberger Classic as they battle Salisbury University at 10 a.m.
