Allie Weir            LYNCHBURG, VA – Behind the power of five first-half goals, three by junior Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River), the No. 17 Lynchburg College field hockey team won its 2008 home opener Wednesday afternoon, defeating the University of Mary Washington 5-1 in non-conference action.

Mary Washington controlled the tempo early on until the 13:42 mark, when Erin Funkhouser (Natural Bridge, VA/Menchville) scored an unassisted goal to put LC up 1-0. Weir scored the next three goals for LC (2-0) over a five-minute span, giving the Hornets a 4-0 advantage.

Freshman Stacey Bahr (Hartland, WI/Arrowhead) scored her first collegiate tally with a minute and half left in the first stanza to finish Lynchburg’s scoring for the day. UMW (0-2) got on the board at the 56:54 mark of the game, as Kristen Haynor scored on a penalty corner from Sarah Pierson and Emma Jones.

Mary Washington topped the shot category, 18-17, while also leading LC by one in penalty corners, 9-8. Hornet keeper Sarah Cates (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) stopped seven shots for her second win of the year, and counterpart Chrissy Bowdren made six saves for the Eagles.
