Erin Funkhouser Shines As Lynchburg Field Hockey Defeats Dickinson 2-1

LC Box Score vs. Dickinson

HARRISONBURG, VA – Junior midfielder Erin Funkhouser (Natural Bridge, VA/Menchville) scored once, and dished out an assist on the game-winning goal as the Lynchburg College field hockey team won its 2008 season opener over Dickinson College 2-1 Sunday on the campus of Eastern Mennonite University.

Funkhouser opened the scoring just 4:06 into the game, as she took a pass from sophomore Caitlin Gibb (North East, MD/Rising Sun) and buried it past Red Devil keeper Amanda West for the tally. LC held its one-goal advantage until Dickinson responded just 28 seconds into the second half, knotting the score at one on a Katie Mersky goal from Lizzie Boorse.

Lynchburg battled back less than two minutes later, as Funkhouser carried a ball from coast-to-coast and laid if off for Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River), who found the back of the goal for the eventual game-winner.

The Hornets held decided advantages in shots, 20-4, and penalty corners, 9-2. West was stout in net for DC (0-2), making 10 saves, six in the first half.

Lynchburg (1-0) takes on the University of Mary Washington Wednesday afternoon on Shellenberger Field at 4 p.m.
