Josh Reed has Six Points as LC Men’s Soccer Defeats Shenandoah 9-1

            HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Junior midfielder Josh Reed (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) had two goal and two assists Saturday afternoon to lead the Lynchburg College men’s soccer team to a 9-1 win over Shenandoah University in the season opener for both teams. It was the second game of the day at the two-day Arby’s/Hampden-Sydney Classic, as the host Tigers defeated Mountain State University (WV) 4-0 in the opener.    

            Junior defender Pat Brown (Williamsburg, VA/Christchurch) opened the scoring onslaught with a goal 10 minutes into the contest on an assist from Jared Melot (Reading, PA/Antietam). Reed followed with his first tally four minutes later and added a goal and an assist before halftime to help give Lynchburg a 6-1 cushion heading into intermission.

            Freshman midfielder Daniel Arriola (Fairfax, VA/Fairfax) found the back of the net twice, while Hunter Smith (Goode, VA/Jefferson Forest), Cam Smith (Goode, VA/Jefferson Forest) and Shawn Bender (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) each had a goal and an assist. Donald Hart III (Springfield, VA/Paul VI) also contributed a goal.

            Alfred Smith scored Shenandoah’s lone goal with 10 minutes left in the first stanza. LC held advantages of 25-2 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks.

            The Hornets (1-0) face Mountain State at noon Sunday in the final day of play at the Classic.
