Study abroad has another record-breaking year
A total of 175 LC students participated in study abroad during the 2010-11 with experiences ranging from an exploration of Rome's millennia of art and architecture to Spanish language and cultural learning in Costa Rica. Approximately 27 percent of the 2011 graduating class completed their studies at LC with a study abroad experience. LC continues to offer extensive study abroad programming from a wide spectrum of academic disciplines with options at winter term, spring break as part of a semester-long course on campus, and summer term. In addition, students may opt for academic year and semester-long experiences through direct exchange programs or study abroad service providers.
Recent graduates attend graduate school abroad
Three members of the 2011 graduating class will be attending graduate school overseas in Poland and the United Kingdom. Ellie Rapp (history) will build upon her internship experience in London and pursue an M.A. in museum studies at University of Leicester. Amber Gavin (international relations) will return to her study abroad alma mater to complete her M.A. in international studies and diplomacy. Amber spent her senior year abroad at the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies. Michael Mariner (international relations) will be working towards his M.A. in Central and European studies at Jagiellonian University in Poland, where he took part in a summer language program following his freshmen year at LC. These students' acceptances into graduate programs abroad demonstrates the value of study abroad and the opportunities the experience creates.
Experiential Learning Grants available for study abroad
All undergraduate students are eligible for an Experiential Learning Grant (ELG) to participate in a Lynchburg College-sponsored study abroad program during the winter or summer terms.
ELGs are tuition credit vouchers that can be used to cover 50 percent of tuition fees, up to a total of three credits, for these experiences. Students will have access to one voucher per academic year. For example, if a student enrolls in a six-credit-hour study abroad program, he/she will essentially pay for three credit hours but receive six credit hours for participation in study abroad.
With such a substantial reduction in tuition costs, the College expects greater participation in study abroad and other experiential learning activities such as internships and faculty-student research.

Kevin McCloskey '10 enters field of international education
Class of 2010 graduate Kevin McCloskeyhas started a career in international education as a result of his Spanish language studies and study abroad experience in Xalapa, Mexico. Kevin recently secured a position as a university relations representative with International Studies Abroad (ISA), the same organization that sponsored his study abroad program in Mexico. Looking back, Kevin considers declaring a Spanish major and study abroad the best decisions he made at LC. "I fell in love with Mexico. The culture, the language and the people's generosity were infectious. Upon my return I was certain that I wanted to enter the field of international education," Kevin said.
After graduation and before his job with ISA, Kevin went to Chile to teach English and continue working on his Spanish. While in Chile, Kevin kept a blog for the LC study abroad website. Be sure to check it out to read about his experience and recent reflections on his academic and professional development both at LC and abroad.
Congratulations, Kevin!
