Four Hornet Baseballers Earn All-State Honors for Historic 2008 Season
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Four Lynchburg College baseball players were honored with All-State accolades Wednesday, as announced by the Virginia Sports Information Director’s Association.
Senior first baseman Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage), junior pitcher Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) and sophomore third baseman Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) all took home first-team honors. Crews finished third on the team in hitting, while setting a new LC single-season standard for doubles with 21.
Devlin, who was recently named an ABCA All-American, finished the year with a 9-0 record also sporting the nation’s fourth best earned-run average at 1.04. Taylor ended his second season at Lynchburg with a .392 batting average, boasting consecutive walk-off singles against Guilford College and Averett University back in March.
Senior shortstop Ronnie LaBrie (Vinton, VA/Staunton River) took home honorable-mention All-State honors. LaBrie was the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2008, placing his name in the top-five in 16 of 18 offensive categories posted on the league’s website.
Christopher Newport pitcher Kenny Moreland was named College Division State Player of the Year while his coach, John Harvell, was honored as the State’s Coach of the Year and Shenandoah’s Greg Van Sickler took home Rookie of the Year honors.
