LC Baseball Knocks Off Christopher Newport 12-1 in NCAA South Regional Play

LC Box Score vs. CNU

DANVILLE, VA - Wet conditions and multiple rain delays did not effect Jon Nichols (Stafford, VA/North Stafford), who tossed eight innings of one-run baseball for the Hornets as LC defeated Christopher Newport University 12-1 early Friday morning to become the only unbeaten team in the NCAA South Regional Tournament, which is being held at American Legion Post 325 Stadium at Dan Daniel Park.

The game, which was initially set to begin at 7 p.m., was delayed until 9:50 p.m. on Thursday evening. After four innings and the score knotted at one, the rain began to fall again causing a 55-minute delay. At last pitch, the scoreboard clock read 1:53 a.m. on Friday morning.

After the final rain delay, LC (32-11) jumped all over the CNU bullpen, which was forced into action after the rain hiatus caused the Captains to pull their starter Steven Millerleile. The Hornets scored one run in the fifth inning, five in the sixth, four in the seventh and one in the bottom of the eight to give them their margin of victory.

Nichols finished with eight strikeouts and only four hits allowed in eight innings of work. Ronnie LaBrie (Vinton, VA/Staunton River) was 3-4 with four RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases, giving him 30 on the season. Matt Winston (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) finished 2-5 with three RBI, while freshman Daniel Haugh (Earlysville, VA/Albemarle) connected for two hits in two at-bats, walking once.

Chris Despins was 2-3 with a solo homer for the Captains (29-13), who now have a short turnaround as they must play at noon tomorrow in game seven of the tournament.

Lynchburg will get the afternoon off tomorrow before taking on the winner of game seven between CNU and Salisbury University at 7:30 p.m.
