LC Baseball Advances with 9-1 Win Over Piedmont College in NCAA South Regional Opener
DANVILLE, VA - Junior Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) tossed a complete-game and senior first baseman Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was 4-4 with a two-run homer as the Hornet baseball team stayed in the winner's bracket of the NCAA South Regional with a 9-1 win over Piedmont College in the opener for both teams.
Devlin was sharp all night, allowing only one run on eight hits while fanning four Lion hitters in earning his third complete-game of the season. The Hornets also set the Lynchburg single-season win record with their 31st victory of the season, in what was their first NCAA game since the 1983 season.
LC (31-11) jumped on the Lions in the top of the first, as Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) singled in Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) after he had doubled to lead off the game.
After a two-run fifth inning and a solo run in the eighth inning, the Hornets exploded for five runs in the ninth inning. Highlighting the ninth inning was a Crews two-run shot and a Ryan Litz (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) three-run bomb to left.
Crews finished with three RBI to go with his four hit performance, while Litz ended 3-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Bradley was 3-5 with two RBI on the evening for the Hornets, as all but one Lynchburg starter had a base hit.
Piedmont (33-13) was paced by Andrew Migitz and Corey Lindsey each had two hits in the loss, as the Lions will now play Salisbury University tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
The Hornets will now take on the Captains of Christopher Newport University tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. in game six of the tournament, which is being held at American Legion Memorial Post 325 Stadium.
