LC Softball Defeats LaGrange 4-0 in NCAA Tournament

Barbie Miles Throws a Complete-Game Four Hit Shutout

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Junior pitcher Barbie Miles (Kinsale, VA/Washington & Lee) threw a complete-game four-hit shutout Thursday to lift the Lynchburg College softball team to a 4-0 win over LaGrange College (GA) in the first day of play at the Division III NCAA Regional at Methodist University. LaGrange, seeded fifth in the seven-team bracket, upset #4 Emory University 2-1 earlier in the day, while Lynchburg received a bye as Fayetteville’s top seed.

LaGrange got two runners on with no outs to start the game, but Miles worked out of the jam. With one out and runners on second and third, senior third-baseman Elizabeth Perkins (Kents Store, VA/Fluvanna County) snared a line drive and tossed it to shortstop Dara Sandifer (Monroe, VA/Holy Cross) covering third for the double play.

The Hornets got on the board in the bottom of the third, as Brittany Allsop (Milford, CT/Jonathan Law) led off with a bunt single, and was sacrificed to second. Perkins drove her home with a two-out single, and Tara Campbell (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) followed with another base-hit. Sandifer hit a looping base-hit behind first base to give Lynchburg a 2-0 lead after three frames.

LC struck again in the bottom of the sixth. Katie Bruce (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) doubled with two outs, and senior catcher Kirstin Swank (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) hit the first home run of the tournament, a shot over the left-field fence, to give LC a four-run cushion.

Miles struck out two and walked two to improve to 17-2 on the season. Bruce connected for two doubles on the day, and Perkins also had two hits. Amanda Daniel worked all seven frames for LaGrange (25-19), walking none while allowing nine hits.

The Hornets (37-6) will have a day off Friday, and will next play the winner of Friday’s Methodist/Neumann College (PA) game in the finals of the winner’s bracket. First-pitch is slated for 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
