SALEM, VA – Lynchburg College’s Elizabeth Perkins (Kents Store, VA/Fluvanna County) was named the Player of the Year Friday with the release of the 2008 All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) softball team. Fellow Hornet Katie Bruce (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) earned the conference’s Rookie of the Year honors, and three other LC players were named to the All-ODAC team.
Perkins, a senior third-baseman, leads the ODAC in batting average (.411), slugging percentage (.811), and on-base percentage (.587). She is second in the conference in home runs (11) and third in runs batted in (46), and has been walked a league-high 56 times.
Bruce, a freshman pitcher/designated hitter, emerged as a two-way threat on the
mound and at the plate in her rookie campaign. She is second in the conference in wins (18), innings pitched (142) and saves (3), and is fourth with 82 strikeouts. Bruce has a .370 average this season with five home runs and 32 RBI.
Both Perkins and Bruce were named first-team All-ODAC, while Kirstin Swank (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) and Brittany Allsop (Milford, CT/Jonathan Law) nabbed second-team honors. Swank, a senior catcher, has batted .304 for the season, with an on-base percentage of .412 and a slugging percentage of .491. She has five home runs and 27 RBI. Allsop, a junior centerfielder, is second on the team with a .381 batting average and leads the squad with 41 runs and 12 stolen bases. Senior shortstop Dara Sandifer (Monroe, VA/Holy Cross) received an honorable mention to the all conference team after being named the Most Valuable Performer at the ODAC Tournament last weekend.
Lynchburg (36-5) won the ODAC Championship this season and is ranked sixth in NCAA Division III this week. The Hornets will participate in the NCAA Division III Tournament in May for the second-straight year, and will find out where and when they will compete Monday morning.
