Lynchburg College will hold commencement exercises for the Class of 2008 at 10 a.m. May 10 in the Dell. A total of 550 degrees are to be awarded, including 454 bachelor's and 96 master's.

While the forecast looks favorable for Saturday, the College is making plans to move commencement events indoors if necessary. For rain locations, please see the full schedule at http://www.lynchburg.edu/commencement.xml.

If it's necessary to move indoors, an announcement will be made by 7:30 a.m. Saturday on the College's website and weather line at 434/544-7669.

The commencement speaker will be Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources Preston Bryant, who was invited to conclude LC's yearlong emphasis on the environment, "A Greener Tomorrow Today."

Prior to joining Governor Tim Kaine's cabinet, Bryant represented Lynchburg for 10 years in the Virginia House of Delegates, where he sponsored landmark legislation to help preserve more than one million acres of nontidal wetlands, streamline the state's stormwater management programs, and create a nutrient-credit trading program to advance upgrades to more than a hundred wastewater treatment facilities.

Bryant also was a partner in a Virginia-based engineering, surveying, and planning firm that specialized in the design of large-scale residential, commercial, and industrial developments as well as transportation facilities.

Bryant was born in Lynchburg and received his B.A. in English from Randolph-Macon College, a master's degree in the humanities from the University of Richmond, and an M.A. in modern British literature from the University of London.

LC's baccalaureate service will be held at 5 p.m. May 9 at Snidow Chapel. The speaker will be the Rev. Jeffrey Wilson, former vice president of Homeland Ministries for North America for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Wilson was born and raised in Nashville, Tenn. and served the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for nearly thirty years as preacher and senior minister. His experience includes having served five congregations throughout the southeast, of which all but one were recognized for their growth during his tenure.

Wilson holds a bachelor of arts from the University of Tennessee, a master of divinity from Vanderbilt University, and a doctorate of ministry from Louisiana Baptist University. Additionally, he has studied and received a recognition award from the Exeter College of Oxford University in England.
