SALEM, VA - The Bridgewater College outdoor men's track and field team ended 10 years of Lynchburg College dominance and won the 2008 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) title Saturday at Roanoke College, by a team score of 232-200. The Roanoke College women out-paced Washington & Lee University 218-149, with Bridgewater in third with 80, followed by LC with 66.

Lynchburg College junior Brandon Edwards (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) was named the Men's ODAC Athlete of the Meet, while Scott Decker (Clifton, VA/Robinson) earned the conference's scholar-athlete award. Hornet Jennie Pernisi (Camden, NY/APW) was recognized as co-Women's Rookie of the Year.

 Edwards paced the Hornet men by winning the 400-meter hurdles (54.77) and the triple jump (14.27 m), taking second in the long jump (6.88 m) and was fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.61). Travis Wray (Newburg, MD/La Plata) captured the 1,500 meter title in 4:02.60 and was second in the 800 with a time of 1:55.83. Ricky Flynn (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) won the 5,000 meters in 15:27 and came in second in the 1,500 in 4:03.09. Chris Word (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass) took the 400-meter title in 49.24 and placed third in the 200-meter dash in 22:02.

Allen Boyles (Woodbridge, VA/Gar-Field) captured the javelin title with a heave of 56.98, and the Hornets finished 1-2-3 in the pole vault, with Decker winning the title by clearing 4.50 meters and Casey Rudd (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) taking second (4.10 m). J.J. Johnson (Lynchburg, VA/Amherst County) scored in three events, taking third in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.42 and nabbing fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.69) and 100-meter dash (11.47). The LC 4 x 400 meter relay team of Rashard Adams (Ashburn, VA), Word, Edwards and Ian McNaughton (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) won the last event of the day in 3:21.70. 

Pernisi won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:54.8 and took second in the 5,000 meters in 18:56.54. Fellow freshman Ashley Allen (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) scored for the Hornets in three events, taking second in the shot put (11.14 m), third in the hammer throw (37.46 m) and fourth in the discus (31.21 m). Ashley Meyer (Springfield, MO/Glendale) finished second in the 1,500 in 4:52.24 and Danielle Garofalo (Boxford, MA/Masconomet) was third in the triple jump with a leap of 10.61 meters and tied for fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.52 meters.   

The Hornets are scheduled to compete at the Penn Relays this Thursday through Saturday in Philadelphia, PA.
