LYNCHBURG, VA – The Hornets got great pitching in game one and timely hitting in the second game, as LC rallied to take both ends of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) twinbill against the Bridgewater College Eagles Saturday from Fox Field. LC took the first game 3-0 before winning the second contest 7-6 in ten innings. With the game one win, LC secured the No. 1 seed in Thursday’s ODAC Tournament at Lynchburg’s City Stadium.
In the opener, junior righthander Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) dazzled, as he tossed a three-hit complete game shutout. Devlin struck out four and walked only one on his way to his seventh win of the season. Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was 2-3 with a run, while Ronnie LaBrie was 1-2 with a RBI.
In game two, LC trailed the entire game until the bottom of the tenth when a Blake Stokely wild pitch scored Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) from third base to give LC a 7-6 victory. LC was down 6-5 in the ninth, but a Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) two-out single to center scored Grant from second to push the game to extras. Lynchburg got good performances in relief from both D.W. Moore (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and Jared Millner (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest). Moore went three innings surrendering only one hit, with Millner giving up a single hit in two innings as he gained his fourth win of the year to go with no losses.
Grant finished 2-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, with Taylor ending game two 2-5. Seniors Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and Matt Winston (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) each pounded a solo homer in their last home conference doubleheader of their careers.
Chad Rhodes was 2-3 for Bridgewater in the opener, with teammate Aaron Read going for four hits in five at-bats in the nightcap. Casey Hartman pitched well in game two, going seven innings allowing four earned runs and seven hits.
Lynchburg takes on Greensboro College Tuesday at 3 p.m. on Fox Field in non-conference action.
