VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team won the regular-season Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) title Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of Virginia Wesleyan College by identical scores of 2-1. The Hornets improve to 15-2 in the conference while the second-place Marlins fall to 12-4 in ODAC play.

Junior right-hander Barbie Miles (Kinsale, VA/Washington & Lee) held the Marlin offense at bay for the first six innings of the opener, and the LC offense struck finally in the top of the seventh. Freshman Katie Bruce (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) doubled home two runs with one out to break the scoreless tie, but VWC threatened in the bottom of the frame.  With one run across and just one out, the Marlins had a runner thrown out at home for the second out and struck out with a runner at third base to end the contest. Miles picked up the win, tossing 6 2/3 innings, and Bruce earned the save. LC was out-hit 7-3, but Miles and Bruce left 10 Marlins stranded on base. Brittaney Brown was the tough-luck loser for VWC.

Virginia Wesleyan scored a run in the first inning of the nightcap, but Bruce would allow no more, scattering six hits while striking out five to earn the complete-game win. Junior Tara Campbell (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) provided all the offense Bruce would need in the third inning, lofting a two-run home run over the left field fence. The Marlins loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but Bruce struck out the next hitter and induced a ground out to give LC the win. Audra Della Rosa (Rumford, RI/St. Mary Academy Bay View) went 2-4 for LC, while Kirstin Swank (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) singled and walked. Campbell also walked twice.

Defending champion Lynchburg (32-5/15-2 ODAC) will now enter the ODAC Championship Tournament next weekend as the top seed. The double-elimination, six-team tourney will be held April 25-27 at the James Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, VA.
