Lynchburg Softball Splits DH with Guilford

LYNCHBURG, VA – The sixth-ranked Lynchburg College softball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Sunday with visiting Guilford College. The loss was the first for the Hornets in 14 conference contests.

The Quakers ripped 16 hits to take the opener 8-6, as Ami Hutcherson went 4-4 with three RBI. Amber Stapler was 3-5 with three runs scored, while Samantha Golley homered. Guilford led 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, but a three-run shot from freshman Katie Bruce (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) brought the Hornets back to just one run behind. But GC added an insurance run in the seventh, and sent down Lynchburg in order to close out the game. Elizabeth Perkins (Kent Store, VA/Fluvanna County) hit a two-run home run for LC.

The Hornets exploded in the nightcap, scoring 13 runs while only making 12 outs to win 13-1 in five innings. Dara Sandifer (Monroe, VA/Holy Cross) was 2-2 with a double, a homer, three runs and three RBI on Senior Day. Perkins also homered again and Brittany Allsop (Milford, CT/Johnathan Law) scored two with a triple. Freshman Sarah Spicer (Purcellville, VA/Loudoun Valley) delivered a pinch-hit, two-run single and Bruce cruised to victory on the mound. Guilford ends the day at 20-17 overall and 7-9 in the ODAC.

Lynchburg (30-4/13-1 ODAC) travels to Randolph-Macon College Tuesday, to make-up a doubleheader at 1:30 p.m.
