LC Men's Lax Posts 13-9 Win Over VA Wesleyan
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The seventh ranked Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team posted a critical 13-9 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win on the road against the Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins Saturday. The victory sets up a battle for first place in the ODAC with Washington and Lee University on Wednesday night.
Lynchburg came out of the gates firing to start the game, leading 4-0 behind two Johnny Black (Timonium, MD/St. Paul's) goals going into the second quarter. Jordan Kenney would fuel a ferocious Marlins comeback as he scored three consecutive goals while the Marlins outscored the Hornets 6-1 in the second quarter to send VWC into the half with a 6-5 lead.
LC would stage its own comeback in the second half, outscoring VWC 6-2 in the quarter to go into the final frame with an 11-8 lead. The Marlins scored just 21 seconds into the fourth, but stout LC defense, timely face-off wins, and controlling possession of the ball allowed LC to hold VWC scoreless the rest of the quarter to secure the win.
Black led LC with three goals, Michael Mundorf (Catonsville, MD/Mt. Saint Joseph) found the back of the net twice, and Taylor Stehlgens (New Vernon, NJ/Madison) and Robert Flintoff (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) each scored once and contributed one assist. The face-off duo of Norby King (Bryn Mawr, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) and Jeff Schwartz (New City, NY/Tabor Academy) controlled the X all game, winning 18 of 26 face-offs for the Hornets. Garrett Curran (Hull, MA/Tabor Academy) tallied 11 saves, including nine in the decisive second-half.
Jordan Kenney led all scorers, contributing with four goals for the Marlins. Maicin Dunk posted two helpers, Drew Langis scored once and dished out two assists, and goalie Tom Skartsiaris stopped 14 shots.
LC held advantages in nearly every category. The Hornets held a 44-36 margin in shots and a 36-29 edge in groundballs. LC also converted 15 of 17 clears compared to 14 of 16 for VWC and they also won 18 of the 26 face-offs.
The Hornets (10-2/3-0) return to the field Wednesday night at 7 p.m. as they host the Generals of Washington & Lee University on Shellenberger Field.
