Haugh’s RBI Single In Tenth Gives LC Ninth Straight Win

Box Score vs. NCWC

LYNCHBURG, VA – Freshman infielder Daniel Haugh (Earlysville, VA/Albemarle) delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the tenth to lift the Lynchburg College baseball team over North Carolina Wesleyan College Friday in non-conference play from Fox Field.

NC Wesleyan scored three runs in the first two innings, two coming on a Matt Smith two-run double in the second inning. The Hornets (23-7) powered back, scoring six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-4 lead. The Battling Bishops (23-10-1) refused to quit as they regained a two-run lead in the sixth frame with four runs of their own.

Trailing by two going into the ninth, the Hornets got a RB I triple from Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage), who was scored by a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage). Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) singled with two outs in the 10th stanza, then the Hornets got a little help as a throwing error extended the inning paving the way for Haugh’s late game heroics.

Bradley ended the game 4-5 with three RBI and the game-winning run scored. Haugh and Crews each finished with three hits apiece, while Matt Winston (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) collected two hits in four at-bats, scoring twice. Keith Yancey (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) got the win in relief, giving up only two hits in two innings of work.

North Carolina Wesleyan was sparked by Smith, who was 5-6 with two RBI and three runs scored. Smith also became the Battling Bishops career hit leader with a single in the first inning, as he now stands with 256 career base knocks. Chris Pecora was 3-6 with five driven home, while Justin Batts tripled and homered for the visitors.

LC now will travel to Salem, VA tomorrow afternoon for a conference doubleheader with Roanoke College, first pitch set for noon.
