Hornet Baseball Extends Win Streak To Eight After 8-3 Win at Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Sophomore Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was 3-4 with two runs and three RBI Wednesday as the Lynchburg College baseball team knocked off Hampden-Sydney College 8-3 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play from Yank Bernier Field.
The Hornets (22-7/11-1 ODAC) scored two runs in the first, highlighted by a Taylor two-run double. LC added three more runs in the third inning, again aided by a run-scoring double by Taylor. H-SC (15-20/6-7 ODAC) got on the board in the bottom of the third with two runs, thanks to two consecutive sacrifice flies.
The Tigers cut the lead to three with a single run in the eighth inning, but the Hornets put the game out of reach with two runs in the ninth, one coming on a solo homer by senior first baseman Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage), his fifth of the season.
Matthew Winston (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) was 2-3 with two RBI and a run, while fellow outfielder David Gaines (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) going 2-5 with a run scored and a RBI. Junior Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) was 2-5 with a RBI, and Crews finished 2-5 on the afternoon.
Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) got the win on the mound, going five innings while allowing three hits and only one earned run. Jon Nichols (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) relieved Devlin and went three innings, giving up one run and two hits.
Nick Price had a multi-hit performance for the Tigers, and David Toney posted a RBI single for Hampden-Sydney.
Lynchburg returns to Fox Field Friday for a matinee with North Carolina Wesleyan College at 3 p.m.
