Oeida Hatcher Conducting 2007

Lynchburg College will launch a new master of arts in music in choral and instrumental conducting beginning this summer.

The new master's program will provide advanced and in-depth training for conducting professionals in schools, churches, and community organizations, as well as those preparing for doctoral programs in conducting.

The intensive six-week summer program will offer courses that are designed to address practical issues in choral/instrumental conducting to improve conducting skills and stylistic awareness. Classes will include instrumental and choral/vocal pedagogy, performance practices, score preparation, rehearsal techniques, and applied music lessons.

The 36-hour program can be completed in four summers or three summers and one academic year. While the majority of classroom/lecture courses will be offered during the summer, private applied music and conducting lessons, as well as graduate ensembles, can be taken as evening classes during fall and spring semesters.

Dr. Jong Kim, professor of music and coordinator of graduate studies in music, will head the choral conducting program, and Dr. Oeida Hatcher, associate professor of music and coordinator of undergraduate studies in music, will coordinate the instrumental conducting program.

Applications are now being accepted for the summer 2008 session. Application information can be obtained from the Office of Graduate Studies (434-544-8383 or gradstudies@lynchburg.edu).
