Nichols Sparkles As Hornets Blank Hampden-Sydney College 9-0
LYNCHBURG, VA – Junior starting pitcher Jon Nichols (Stafford, VA.North Stafford) was brilliant for the Hornets Wednesday as LC defeated Hampden-Sydney College 9-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play from Fox Field.
Nichols was never in trouble, with only one Tiger reaching third base all game. He went eight innings, allowing no runs and striking out seven hitters, scattering five hits along the way. Jared Millner (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) finished up the game for LC, striking out two of the three hitters he faced.
The Hornets (21-7/10-1 ODAC) jumped on H-SC starter Bryan Breedlove early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first, though two runs were unearned. Sophomore Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) homered in the fourth inning, and an inning later the Hornets got a pair of runs thanks to a two-run triple by senior Matt Winston (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring). Junior Ricky Capelli (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) finished LC’s scoring with a two-run double in the eighth inning.
Freshman Daniel Haugh (Earlysville, VA/Albemarle) was 3-4 on the afternoon, scoring twice for the Hornets, who stretched their winning streak to seven. Ronnie LaBrie (Vinton, VA/Staunton River) was 2-4 with a run scored, while teammates Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and Grant each finished 2-5 with two runs and a RBI.
The Tigers (13-18/6-6 ODAC), who failed to notch an extra-base hit, were led by Todd Harrell’s 2-4 afternoon. Breedlove tossed all eight innings for H-SC, striking out four and surrendering seven earned runs.
Lynchburg is now scheduled to play at Ferrum College Thursday night at 7 p.m.
