LYNCHBURG, VA – Great pitching and timely hitting seemed to be the key for No. 9 Lynchburg College Sunday afternoon, as they took both ends of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) softball doubleheader over Eastern Mennonite University with scores of 2-1 in game one and 3-2 in nine innings in the nightcap.

In game one, LC got on the board quickly, scoring a run in the bottom of the first thanks to a RBI single from Elizabeth Perkins (Kents Store, VA/Fluvanna Co.). EMU evened the game at one in the top of the fourth, as Jessica Sullivan connected for her second of a game-high three basehits, this one of the run scoring variety. Lynchburg pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the sixth, as Brittany Allsop (Milford, CT/Johnathan Law) smoked a RBI triple off the right field wall, scoring Sarah Spicer (Purcellville, VA/Loudoun Co.) who had previously doubled.

Perkins was 1-1 with three walks in game one, two of them intentionally. Barbie Miles (Kinsale, VA/Washington-Lee) threw a gem, scattering four hits over seven innings, allowing just the one run.

In the second game, EMU drew first blood, scoring two runs in the second inning. Sullivan walked, and after being sacrificed to second, she was brought home on a double by Natasha Viafora. Viafora later scored on a wild pitch to give the visitors their biggest lead of the afternoon. The nationally-ranked Hornets battled back, as Katie Bruce (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) left the yard in the fourth, and Perkins delivered her eighth homer of the season after being walked intentionally again the at-bat before. After four scoreless innings, LC got the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, as Lauren Duguay (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Bruce from third and keeping LC undefeated in the conference.

Bruce hurled all nine innings for LC in game two, giving up two runs on six hits, and Perkins finished 2-2 with two intentional free passes for LC.

EMU (19-8/9-3 ODAC) was led by Viafora and Mandee Madden in game two, both of whom finished with two hits.

The Hornets (23-4/6-0 ODAC) now look ahead to the much-anticipated matchup with Bridgewater College Wednesday on Aubrey Moon Field at 3 p.m.
