Lauren Askey '08 led the Lynchburg College women's soccer team to the Elite Eight last fall while maintaining a near-perfect GPA.
This feat made her a double All-American and the first LC women's soccer player to achieve academic and athletic All-American status in the same season.
"I've realized looking back that I made the absolute best choice in coming here," Lauren said. "It allowed me to achieve both my dreams."
After graduation, Lauren will head to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to work on her master's in athletic training. In addition to excelling on the soccer field and in the classroom, Lauren has enjoyed the volunteer work that her team participated in, including Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity, and Gifts for Gulu, a soccer extravaganza that raises money and equipment for children in war-torn northern Uganda.
Hailing from Baltimore, Lauren was named to the first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District III squad, making her eligible for the All-American vote. Lauren is the seventh student-athlete in school history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-American honors. She was also named to the first-team All-American list after anchoring a defense that allowed only seven goals all season.
Lauren has a 3.98 cumulative GPA with a major in athletic training, and was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2006 and 2007. She is a four-time first-team All-ODAC selection as a defender and has been honored three-times on the all-state and all-region teams.
The 2007 Hornet women's soccer team won the ODAC title, with Lauren scoring the game-winning goal in the tournament championship game. LC advanced into the Division III NCAA Championship Tournament and won three games to make it into the Elite Eight for the second time in program history. The Hornets finished the season 19-4-3.
