Hornet Baseball Rallies For ODAC Sweep of Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team came back in the bottom of the ninth of game two to complete a doubleheader sweep of Randolph-Macon College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Saturday. LC took the first game 17-1, before turning around to win the second game 6-4 in dramatic fashion.

In game one, the Hornets scored 10 first inning runs in chasing Yellow Jacket starter Charlie Hartt after two-thirds of an inning. Senior Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was 3-4 with five RBI and two runs, while Ryan Litz (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest), Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell), David Gaines (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) and Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) all had two hits in game one. Junior Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) got the victory in game one, tossing five innings of scoreless ball, scattering four hits.

In the nightcap, LC trailed 4-3 going into the ninth inning, but after R-MC Dillon Sheads loaded the bases, Grant stepped up and tied the ball game with a RBI single to right field. LC took the lead on a Jacket error, and a double play scored an insurance run for the Hornets. Jared Millner (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) got the win, going three innings in relief, surrendering only one hit and striking out two.

Greg Meleski was 2-5 in the second game, hitting a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. Byron Mendenhall pitched well for R-MC (12-10/5-2 ODAC) in game two, going seven innings while allowing no earned runs.

LC (17-7/7-1 ODAC) will now have a few days off before traveling to Winchester, VA for a non-conference tussle with Shenandoah University Friday at 3 p.m.
