LC Hosts Track Invitational Saturday
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College outdoor track and field teams provisionally qualified for national competition in three events Saturday as the Hornets hosted the LC Invitational on Shellenberger Track.
Sophomore Chris Word (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass) provisionally qualified for national competition in the 400, finishing in 47.66 to rank second all-time in the event at LC. Both Hornet relay teams also provisionally qualified for nationals, as Word joined J.J. Johnson (Lynchburg, VA/Amherst County), Earl Graves (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) and Brandon Edwards (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) to win the 4x100 relay in 41.88. Will Tolbert (Missouri City, TX/Hightower) joined forces with Word, Edwards and Graves to qualify in the mile relay in 3:16.53.
Graves ran a 48.66 in the 400-meter dash to place second, Ricky Flynn (Gaithersburg, VA/Damascus) won the 1,500 in 4:01.33 and Ryan Van Alstine (Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) ran the 5,000 in 15:21.
Kyra Richardson (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) ran times of 12.87 and 27.00 respectively in the 100 and 200-meter dashes to pace the women’s team. Danielle Garofalo (Boxford, MA/Masconomet) leaped 5.14 meters in the long jump, while Jessica Gibbs (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) was close behind at 5.02. Jennie Pernisi (Camden, NY/APW) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 12:26.43 and Shawn Jackson (Virginia Beach, VA/Floyd E. Kellam) completed the 200 in 27.28.
Lynchburg will compete at the Winthrop Invitational next Saturday.
