LC Softball Splits Games at GBORO Invite
BURLINGTON, NC – The Lynchburg College softball team split a pair of one-run games Friday at the Greensboro College Invitational, with two more to play Saturday.
The second-ranked Hornets lost the opening contest to Emory University (GA) 2-1, who recent dropped out of the top 25. The contest was tied entering the bottom of the seventh, but a two-out triple from The Eagles’ Carey Smith-Marchi plated the winning run. Barbie Miles (Kinsale, VA/Washington & Lee) worked six and two-thirds of an inning on the mound for LC, allowing just six hits. Emory’s Shanon Anderson struck out 12 and scattered six singles for the win – capitalizing on nine Hornets left on base. Emory is 14-6 on the season.
The roles reversed in the second game, as the Hornets plated two in the bottom of the eighth to defeat Greensboro 5-4. Senior Kirstin Swank (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) and Katie Bruce (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) slapped RBI singles to rally Lynchburg to victory. Tara Campbell (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun Co.) was 3-4 with a double and Swank had two hits. Bruce threw all eight innings to earn the win on the mound to bring her record to 8-2 on the season. Jessica Clack was 2-3 for the Pride (9-9-2).
Lynchburg (17-3) will square off with Emory (10 a.m.) and Greensboro (2 p.m.) again Saturday.
