16-Run Second Inning Lifts LC Baseball Past Penn State-Harrisburg 22-2

LC Box Score vs. PSU-Harrisburg

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team exploded for 16 runs in the second inning, highlighted by a Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) grand slam, as it cruised to a 22-2 win over Penn State-Harrisburg Thursday in non-conference play from Fox Field.

LC (12-6) scored in only three innings, but two three-run stanzas combined with the big second inning was too much for the Lions (3-5). In the second inning, the Hornets sent 17 batters to the plate, batting around the order twice, as they scored 16 runs on eight hits. The inning output was the highest in a single inning since 2005, when LC posted a 21-run second frame against St. Paul’s College on Apr. 15.

Taylor had six RBI in the second inning alone, finishing 2-2 with two runs scored and seven driven in. Juniors Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) and Ricky Capelli (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) each collected three hits on the afternoon, while Matt Winston (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) and Matt Painter (Danville, VA/Dan River) both added two hits apiece.

Junior hurler D.W. Moore (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) got the win for LC, as he worked five innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits. Matt Morgan (Bedford, VA/Liberty) took over for Moore, and allowed one run on two hits over three innings of relief.

Andrew Haden was stellar in relief for PSU-H, as he went four innings allowing no runs while scattering three hits. Derron Pellman and Kevin Bowman each added doubles for the Lions.

LC returns to Fox Field tomorrow afternoon, as the Jumbos of Tufts University come to town for a single non-conference outing at 2:30 p.m.
