Admission to the College Degree Programs
A graduate student may apply to Lynchburg College using the paper application or the printable online application. Before the admissions committee can consider an application for admission to a degree program, a candidate’s file must be complete in all details, including the following:
- a degree application form, including the personal essay;
- an official transcript documenting receipt of a bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association (and any other undergraduate transcripts reflecting relevant work which is not reflected on the bachelor’s degree transcript) (Note: for current college seniors, subsequent documentation of degree completion must come prior to enrollment);
- any relevant graduate studies transcript(s) (if applicable);
- demonstrated academic aptitude as indicated by a satisfactory undergraduate record.
- three letters of recommendation; and
- $30 non-refundable application fee that is not applied toward college expenses.
Degree admissions decisions are based on the careful consideration of all required admissions components. The focus of the admission committee’s review is an evaluation of an individual’s likelihood of success in one of the graduate programs.
Admission to the M. A. in Music Program
- Bachelor’s degree in music from an accredited institution;
- Minimum of one year of public or private school teaching experience or two years of experience as a conductor or associate conductor;
- Minimum GPA of 3.00 for last 60 semester hours and 3.00 for all music hours;
- Submission of performance portfolio as follows:
--For choral conducting applicants
Sound recording of solo vocal performances (2-3 selections)
Video recording of a 20-minute choral conducting performance
Video recording of a 20 minute choral rehearsal demonstration
--For instrumental conducting applicants
Video recordings of a 20-minute instrumental conducting
performance
Video recordings of a 20-minute rehearsal demonstration
Diagnostic Exams for New Students
All students entering the M.A. in music program must take a diagnostic exam in music theory prior to the start of their first semester. If additional coursework in this area is required after the exam, students must enroll in MUSC 504 Graduate Music Theory Review in their first semester at
International Students
All students who completed their undergraduate degree at a non-U.S. institution must submit all application materials including appropriate test scores (TOEFL). Non-residents must submit all application materials at least three months prior to the beginning of the term or semester for which admission is sought. Once students are on campus, they will be tested on their English speaking/listening comprehension. They may be asked to take additional English classes during their first semester at Lynchburg College.
Non-Degree Programs
A candidate’s file for admission as a non-degree student to take coursework for teacher licensure renewal or professional enrichment must be complete and include the following:
- A non-degree application form;
- Official transcripts of all work undertaken at other institutions;
- $30 non-refundable application fee that is not applied toward college expenses
