Taylor’s RBI Single in Ninth Propels Hornet Baseball Past Guilford 8-7

Box Score vs. Guilford

LYNCHBURG, VA – Sophomore Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was 1-5 on the afternoon, but his one single turned out to be the most important hit LC would get. Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) scored from third on Taylor’s single in bottom of the ninth gave the Lynchburg College baseball team an exciting 8-7 win over Guilford College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action from Fox Field Sunday.

Guilford (7-6/0-2 ODAC) scored in the top half of the first, thanks to an RBI single by Jason Flud. Lynchburg fought back, taking the lead with a five-run third inning, highlighted by four consecutive RBI knocks.

The Quakers would not go away though, as they recaptured the lead in the top of the fifth with four runs on five hits. LC tied the game in the bottom of the seventh frame, highlighted by a two-run single by senior first baseman Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage).

GC put runners on in the top half of the ninth, but junior closer Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) came on and calmed the Quaker rally. In the bottom half of the deciding inning, Grant reached on a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second, and following a hit batter and single, Taylor came through with the late game heroics for Lynchburg.

Crews finished with four hits in five at-bats, notching three RBI for the Hornets (8-5/2-0 ODAC), who have now won four straight ballgames. Grant was the only other LC batter with a multi-hit performance, finishing 2-5 with two runs scored. Jared Millner (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) was effective in relief, going two and two-thirds allowing no runs or hits.

Flud and Phil Drew each had three hits for Guilford, with Josh Sumler, Brad Buchman and Jared Davis all collecting two hits apiece.

LC welcomes non-conference foe Averett University to Fox Field Tuesday at 2 p.m.
