Late Homeruns Lift LC Baseball Past Guilford Saturday 9-7

GREENSBORO, NC - Two late homeruns helped the Lynchburg College baseball team knock off the host Quakers of Guilford College 9-7 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both teams from McBane Field Saturday afternoon.

Lynchburg (7-5/1-0 ODAC) was ahead 6-3 in the eight inning, but Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) slammed his third homer of the season, a two-run shot, to give the Hornets a 8-3 lead. Junior Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/Staunton River) followed up with a long ball of his own in the ninth inning, which pushed the LC advantage out to 9-3.

The Hornets six-run lead proved to be just enough, as two homeruns in the ninth inning pulled the Quakers to within two runs at 9-7. Junior closer Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) came on with two outs in the last frame, and got the final out for his third save of the season.

Crews finished 3-5 with the homer, two doubles, four RBI and three runs, while Matt Winston (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) was 3-5 as well with two runs driven in. Hornet leadoff man Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) had three hits in four at-bats, scoring once. Junior hurler Jonathan Nichols (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) worked one and two-thirds innings in relief, allowing one run in earning his second win of the season.

The Quakers (7-5/0-1 ODAC) got two homers from Brad Buchman, who finished the game 4-5 with five driven in. Josh Sumler also went deep for Guilford, as he posted a 2-5 afternoon.

Lynchburg welcomes the Quakers to town tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. on Fox Field for another ODAC tussle.
