Hornet Baseball Tops Averett University 14-2

Box Score at Averett

DANVILLE, VA – Every Hornet starter had at least one hit as the Lynchburg College baseball team rolled by Averett University 14-2 in non-conference action on a soggy Tuesday afternoon.

Lynchburg (6-5) scored in five of the first six frames, including two runs in each of the first two innings. The Cougars (5-6) got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth to make the score 6-1, but LC responded with four runs in the top of the sixth to put the game away. LC did get some assistance, as six of their 14 runs were unearned, thanks to three Averett misplays.

LC was led by Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage), who posted a perfect 5-5 day, driving in four while scoring once. Ronnie LaBrie (Vinton, VA/Staunton River) was 3-5 with three RBI and three runs, as junior second baseman Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) broke out of a mini-slump with a 3-6 day.

Sophomore Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was 2-5 with a triple and a run scored, with teammates Ryan Litz (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) and Matt Winston (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) each finishing 2-5 with a run scored.

Starting pitcher Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) deviated from his normal closer role to toss five innings of solid ball. Devlin scattered six hits and allowed only one run, walking none and striking out three AU hitters. Junior lefty Rich Glover (Bedford, VA/Liberty) was strong out of the bullpen, going three innings surrendering only two hits.

The Hornets will open Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Saturday when they travel to Greensboro, NC for a single game at 1 p.m. against Guilford College.
