Hornet Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Alvernia

LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the Crusaders of Alvernia College Saturday afternoon from Fox Field, as the Hornets took game one 7-3, before falling in the nightcap 5-0.

Lynchburg used three two-run innings in the opener to gain the margin of victory. Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was 4-4 with three RBI, while Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) also was perfect at the plate, going 3-3 with two knocked in. Matt Winston (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) was 2-3 with a run scored and run driven in. D.W. Moore (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) got the win for LC, as he tossed five and third innings, striking out five Crusaders in the process. Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) earned the save, throwing an inning and a third of hitless ball.

In game two, LC never got the bats going, as they were held to only four hits over the seven-inning contest. Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was 2-3, including a long triple down the right field line. LC starter Conner Thompson (Solomans, MD/Reservoirs) went five in a third innings, allowing four earned runs, while being saddled with the loss. Jared Millner (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) gave up only one hit over the last inning and a third of the ball game.

Alvernia (1-1) was sparked in the first game by Tim Carroll, who finished 3-4 with two RBI. Dale Curry was 2-4 in the Crusader's win, driving in three runs, while Tim Alquist, Steve DeBarberie and Steve Burdan all had multi-hit games in the late contest.

The Hornets (4-5) and Alvernia play the rubber match of this three-game set tomorrow, when they battle on Fox Field at 1 p.m.
