Hornet Baseball Defeats Frostburg State 18-1, Methodist 7-5

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Lynchburg College snapped their three-game season opening losing streak in a big way Saturday, as they knocked off Frostburg State 18-1 and Methodist University 7-5 in non-conference action.

In the morning outing, Frostburg State scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, but that was all the Bobcats (0-2) would get as the Hornets scored the next 18 runs. Ricky Capelli (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) led the Hornets, going 3-4 with four knocked in and a pair of runs scored. Ronnie LaBrie (Vinton, VA/Staunton River) was 3-4 with two runs, while Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was 2-4 with three RBI and four runs scored. Freshman Daniel Haugh (Earlysville, VA/Albemarle) was 2-4 with four runs batted in. Jonathan Nichols (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) got the win, going six innings surrendering just one run on four hits.

In the nightcap, the Hornets got six and a third strong innings out of Conner Thompson (Solomans, MD/Reservoir), as he allowed only three earned runs. Senior first baseman Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was 2-4 with a solo shot, while Matthew Winston (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) was 3-4 with four knocked in. Jared Millner (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) worked one and two-thirds innings, striking out two, with Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) posting a perfect ninth for his first save of the season.

Lynchburg (2-3) will take on both of these teams again tomorrow, as LC and FSU will play at 1 p.m. and the Hornets and Monarchs will battle at 4 p.m.
