A lecture on "Evolution and Faith: What is at Stake?" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. February 8 in Snidow Chapel at Lynchburg College. John F. Haught, senior fellow of science and religion at Woodstock Theological Center, Georgetown University, is the speaker.
Haught, who lectures internationally, is especially interested in science, cosmology, evolution, ecology, and religion.
He testified for the plaintiffs in the recent "intelligent design" trial in Kitzmiller et al. vs. Dover Board of Education in Dover, Penn. The plaintiffs successfully argued that intelligent design is a form of creationism and that the school board policy requiring that it be taught as an alternative to evolution violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Haught has written more than a dozen books, including, Deeper Than Darwin: the Prospect for Religion in the Age of Evolution and God after Darwin: A Theology of Evolution. His most recent book is God and the New Atheism: A Critical Response to Dawkins, Harris and Hitchens.
The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Shannon Brennan at 434/544-8609.
