
It is important to remember that finding funding can take time. Be prepared to invest time and effort in your application. The first step in planning is to make an appointment with the Financial Aid Office (544-8228), and to start doing some research on scholarships and grants.

Creative Fundraising
Your energy, and enthusiasm - and your creative approaches to funding - for an international experience will be rewarded!- Waive holiday or birthday gifts and ask for financial gifts or loans instead.
- Write a creative letter to all your relatives, asking for financial support in exchange for monthly letters while abroad, or a presentation and dinner when you return. And be sure to keep careful records of who supported you so you can express your appreciation.
- Ask friends and siblings to join you in raising money by painting, cleaning, or washing cars.
- Collect used books, CDs, etc., and have a sale.
- SAVE!
Scholarships
It never hurts to apply! Check on-line using the keywords "financial aid," "scholarships," "international study," and "study abroad" - and for scholarships for study in specific countries.
Shoemaker International Travel Scholarship:Lynchburg College students benefit from the College's Shoemaker International Travel Scholarship, established in 2001, that provides support for students enrolled in a foreign study program being taught in a foreign language and enrolled in a foreign study program taught in English in a non-English speaking country. David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship:
The Institute of International Education funds the National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships for study abroad. NSEP Boren Scholarships are available to degree-seeking undergraduates. Emphasized world regions include Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, the NIS, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East. Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship:
This is the largest privately funded international scholarship program. Preference is given to studies in non-English speaking countries; a limited number of awards are given to students studying in the UK. Applicants must have completed two years of study at a U.S. university and be under the age of 25. All applicants must be citizens of a country in which there are Rotary clubs. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship:The Institute of International Education (IIE) funds the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by IIE through its Southern Regional Center in Houston, Texas, this program enables students who have limited financial means the opportunity to participate in undergraduate study abroad opportunities worldwide. The program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students at two- and four-year institutions to pursue country-based study abroad programs of up to one academic year. To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. Phi Kappa Phi Scholarships:
The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi offers Study Abroad Grants designed to recognize and assist undergraduates as they seek knowledge abroad. Twenty grants of $1,000 are awarded annually. Website: http://www.phikappaphi.org.
