Virginia Wesleyan Topples Lynchburg Women 68-47

LYNCHBURG, VA – Senior forward Heather Phillips scored a game-high 28 points in leading the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College to a 68-47 victory over Lynchburg College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Tuesday night from Turner Gymnasium.

The Hornets couldn’t get much going offensively, as they shot just 27% percent from the field for the game, a season low. The Hornets trailed five at the break, but the Marlins pulled away in the second half and held LC (8-6/5-4 ODAC) to just six second half buckets.

Sophomores Dana Esposito (New Port Richey, FL/Holy Names) and Brittany Dahn (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) were the only Hornets with double figures, both notching 11 points for the home team. Dahn added a game-high 15 rebounds, notching her sixth double-double of the season.

Phillips got her game-high total on 10-17 shooting from the floor, making all seven of her free throw attempts, and added a team-best nine boards. Sophomore Tonia Jones added 16 points for the Marlins (12-3/9-1 ODAC), who stay atop of the conference standings with the win.

Lynchburg is back on the court Saturday afternoon as part of a doubleheader with the men’s basketball team. The women’s team is set to battle Guilford College at 3 p.m., and the men take on Washington & Lee University at 5:30 p.m. in Turner Gym.
