"Nationalism as portrayed in the Mazurkas of Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin" will be the topic of the first Esther C. Olin Lecture Recital Series on Piano Performance January 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Sydnor Performance Hall, Schewel Hall.
The lecture/recital series has been established by the LC Music Program to honor Esther Olin, piano and composition professor, who retired in May after teaching at the College for more than 20 years.
Cynthia B. Ramsey, pianist and assistant professor of music at Lynchburg College, will perform the Opus 68, No. 1, 3, and 4 and present the lecture. Other music faculty and staff participating on the program include F. Johnson Scott III, instructor of music, performing Opus 59, No. 2; Rose M. Peak, staff accompanist, playing Opus 24, No. 2; and Melanie Braxton Coleman, a 2006 LC graduate and student in Esther Olin's piano studio, performing Opus 63, No. 2.
Four LC piano students will also perform: Francis Longaker ('09) Opus 7, No. 1; Brittany Montoro ('10) Opus 33 No. 4; Matthew Booth ('11) Opus 41, No. 3; and Yeseul Park, an exchange student from Hannam University in South Korea, Opus 63 No. 3.A reception of traditional Polish and American foods will be held in the Flint Lobby of Schewel Hall following the recital. The event is free and open to the public.
