Mission Statement

Teresa Gillette
"Going to St. Lucia gave me fantastic experience in the classroom. It was so eye-opening to the challenges facing the developing world and has inspired me to continue service-learning."
Theresa Gillette '14 (English/education)
Austin Davis
"The Chinese are much more open and accepting than they are perceived. I thought we would be treated like unwanted foreigners, ignored, or have a difficult time adjusting and getting comfortable. However, it was the complete opposite. I felt at home the very moment we arrived."
Austin Davis '14 (business administration)

The Study Abroad Program is an integral and indispensable component of the College's mission to:

  • prepare our students for intelligent and wholehearted participation in a global society,
  • create a learning environment that respects and supports broad diversity, and
  • create a learning environment that respects and supports global understanding.

Study Abroad opportunities provide LC students:
  • an introduction to a cultural perspective other than one's own,
  • off-campus foreign study and travel experiences, and
  • discovery and appreciation of global interdependence from cultural, economic, historical, and political perspectives.

Programs vary in length from one-week field experiences to a full semester or academic year immersed in a foreign culture.

In 1996, only 5 percent of LC graduates had a study abroad experience. In 2011, approximately 27 percent of the graduating class completed their studies at LC with a study abroad experience.

This is evidence of both heightened student interest and the increased number of Lynchburg College programs carefully developed by LC faculty and the International Programs Office.

Lynchburg College has set a strategic goal of 50 percent participation in study abroad programs. Students in all academic disciplines are encourage to study abroad.
