The Study Abroad Program is an integral and indispensable component
of the College's mission to:

  • prepare our students for intelligent and wholehearted participation in a global society
  • create a learning environment that respects and supports broad diversity
  • create a learning environment that respects and supports global understanding

"The service learning project in St. Lucia provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to use what we learn in the classrooms at LC. St. Lucia definitely opened my eyes, mind, and heart. The people that we interacted with in St. Lucia learned from us, and we, in turn, learned from them."

~Ashley Schmidt '10

An education student, Ashley took part in the College's first ever international service learning study abroad program in St. Lucia in summer 2008. Education and nursing students performed developmental and health screenings for preschool-aged children as a service to the St. Lucia Ministry of Education while international relations students worked with disadvantaged youth at schools and community centers.

Study Abroad opportunities at Lynchburg College provide:

  • an introduction to a cultural perspective other than one's own
  • off-campus foreign study and travel experiences
  • discovery and appreciation of global interdependence from perspectives of (but not limited to) cultural, economic, historical, and political natures

Programs vary in length from one-week field experiences to a full semester immersed in a foreign culture.

In 1996, approximately 5 percent of Lynchburg College graduates had a study abroad experience.
In 2009, nearly 30 percent of Lynchburg College graduates had a study abroad experience.

This is evidence of both heightened student interest and the increased number of Lynchburg College programs!

Lynchburg College has set a strategic goal of 50 percent participation in study abroad programs.

"One of my favorite things about the Korean Studies program was the fact that we were able to have 'Korean buddies.' My buddy was definitely one of the nicest and most fun people I've known. We were paired up perfectly and the adventures we had together and the times we shared were very meaningful to me."

Jill took part in the Korean Studies Summer Program 2008 at LC's sister school Hannam University in Daejeon, South Korea. She poses for a picture here with her new friends.
