John Marks Gets Written Up !!!!
Research into Lynchburg history by sophomore history major John Marks was given top billing in our local Sunday paper, The News & Advance. The article featured John's primary source research into slave markets in Lynchburg with details that were both surprising and disturbing.
The city is in the midst of a community dialogue about race, so John's work was certainly "of the moment." Nothing brings the past to the foreground so much as locating the exact places where certain activities took place, especially when those locations are still clearly central to community life. Surprisingly, John began the research last year, when he was merely a "freshtover!" His work was based on many primary documents and it is truly original in its scope and findings. It was also of such high quality that it earned him a slot in last year's Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program. Congratulations, John!
