Lynchburg Men Fall Just Short Of Randolph-Macon 56-51

Box score

ASHLAND, VA – Sophomore forward Mason Wooldridge (New Canton, VA/Fork Union) scored a game-high 27 points on 11-19 shooting from the field, but it was not enough as the Yellow Jackets held on for a 56-51 win in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s basketball action Wednesday evening.

Lynchburg (2-6/0-2 ODAC) trailed for the majority of the contest, but grabbed the lead with 15:59 left in the game on a trifecta by senior guard Kwame Safo (Vienna, VA/George C. Marshall).  Randolph-Macon quickly regained the edge shortly thereafter and was able to hold off the pesky Hornets.  Lynchburg trailed 52-51 with four minutes remaining in the contest, but was unable to make another field goal through the rest of regulation as R-MC iced the game from the line.

Wooldridge added a team-high eight rebounds to his scoring total, while junior guard Jack Burgess (Durham, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) hit all three of his long-distance attempts to finish with nine points. LC outshot the Yellow Jackets 38%-35% over the contest, also holding Randolph Macon to eight percent (1-12) from long distance.  The Hornets themselves shot 53.3 from deep, but made only ten shots inside the arc, which turned out to be the difference.

Randolph-Macon (8-2/2-1 ODAC) was led by Jeremy Dixon’s double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds.  Justin Short had 11 points, with Jordan Brown ending as the only other Yellow Jacket in double figures with 10 points off the bench.

The Hornets are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Harrisonburg, VA for a 7 p.m. conference tussle with the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University.
