How to find an article
Finding information in articles published in journals, magazines, newspapers and online resources is an important part of research for many classes. The library provides over fifty 'bibliographic databases', usually referred to simply as databases, that provide access to those articles. Typically, students are assigned to find articles in one of two ways:
- Find one or more articles on a topic.
- Find one or more specific articles, based on a citation.
Each of these type of assignments requires a different set of research steps:
- To find one or more articles on a topic:
- Go to the library's home page
- Use the Find Articles search box
- Select the appropriate subject from the drop down menu
- Enter your search terms in the search box or
- Select a specific database and then do your search
- You will then get a results list with citations to articles
- Choose the citations that look most promising for your assignment
- If the citation has a link to the actual article, use it and read and/or print the article
- If the there is no link to the fulltext, then try using the "Article Linker" link and it will open a program that will direct you to the fulltext of the article, if it is available at the Knight-Capron library.
- If the library does not have the fulltext online or in print, you can use the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) link in the database or in the Article Linker window to request that the library obtain a copy of the article. (If there is an ILL link in the database, that is the best one to use, it will save you some time and typing)
- To find one or more specific articles from a citation:
- From the citation, determine the name of the publlication in which the article is published.
- Go to the library's home page
- Use the Journal finder link
- Enter the name (title) of the publication, not the title of the article, in the search box and click on the 'Search' button
- If the library has access to the publication online or in print, a link will appear with the dates of publication that are available
- If the article you need was published within those available dates, use the link and then use the search options within the database to find the article
- If the result shows that the publication is available in the 'Lynchburg College Print Titles', then you can get a copy of the article by coming to the library and photocopying the article from the print copy
- If the library does not have the fulltext online or in print, you can use the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service to request that the library obtain a copy from another library.
