The Lynchburg College athletic department is tied for 25th in the nation in the most recent Division III U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings.
Six of the seven fall NCAA championships have now been completed and are reflected in the standings. The Sports Academy Directors Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports - nine women's and nine men's.
The Hornets earned 73 points with the women's soccer team's three NCAA Division III Tournament wins and Elite Eight finish. The LC field hockey team scored 53 points for the cup standings with one tournament victory and a Sweet 16 showing.
Lynchburg overall has 126 points, tied with Luther College (Iowa), and ranks ahead of any Old Dominion Athletic Conference or Virginia Division III school. Washington University (MO) is first, with Amherst (MA) in second.
"Lynchburg College has a very strong tradition of recognized excellence in both academics and athletics, all earned by its dedicated scholar-athletes who are guided by some of the very best coaches and professors in the country," said Lynchburg College President Kenneth Garren.
"It has been an extreme pleasure for me this fall in having the honor of presenting to the Hornet athletic teams the conference tournament championship trophies, sometimes earned on our own Shellenberger Field. and just as often on the athletic fields of our opponents."
