 Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Colandra Rollins posted game-highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds Tuesday evening to lead the Christopher Newport University women’s basketball team to a 79-72 win over visiting Lynchburg College in non-conference play.

The Hornets led for most of the first eight minutes of the game, but strong finish to the half left the Captains in possession of a 40-31 lead at intermission. CNU was ahead by as many as 13 late in the game, but LC rallied to cut the advantage to just 73-70 with 1:26 left after a lay-up from sophomore forward Tamara Snead (Richmond, VA/Henrico). But Christopher Newport held on for the win, scoring its last four points from the charity stripe.

Snead scored a team-high 13 points, 10 of them in the game’s final 5:18. She added a team-best 13 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive end, in just 18 minutes of play. Dana Esposito (New Port Richie, FL/Holy Names) netted 10 points, Kylie Lucas (Verona, VA/Fort Defiance) tallied nine points and seven rebounds while Kristina Darby (Tampa, FL/Holy Names) posted eight points and four assists. The Hornets out-rebounded their hosts 47-41 and corralled 25 caroms on the offensive end of the floor.

Chelsie Schweers had 22 points and eight assists for CNU (4-1). Jessica Moore added 13 points and eight rebounds, and Michele Russell had 12 points and six assists. Four Captains played more than 36 minutes in the 40-minute contest: Schweers (39), Moore (38), Russell (37) and Rollins (36).
