Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men’s basketball team defeated visiting Christopher Newport University 81-79 in a non-conference game Monday night behind seven three pointers from sophomore Brad Puffenbarger (Blue Grass, VA/Highland).

Lynchburg went into the half with a 43-34 lead. Puffenbarger converted on five of his seven three point attempts in the first half to lead the Hornets out of the gate with 15 first-half points. LC shot 55% overall and 69% from deep in the first stanza.

The Captains (1-6) opened the second half on a 10-0 run to take an early lead. The second-half would go back and forth with multiple lead changes. LC led 76-72 with 31 seconds left in the game. LC made five of nine free throws late, and sophomore forward Jeff Langrock (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) rebounded a missed free throw with four seconds left and made one of his two free throw attempts to put LC up two. A short Captain jumper at the buzzer fell just short.

Puffenbarger made seven of his 12 attempts from three, one short of the school record, and also added five rebounds. Langrock scored 19 points and also collected eight rebounds and four assists. Senior guard Kwame Safo (Vienna, VA/George C. Marshall) added 15 points on 5-11 shooting along with five rebounds, six assists, three blocks, and two steals while sophomore forward Mason Wooldridge (New Canton, VA/Fork Union) contributed with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Davon Barton led all scorers, chipping in with 33 points and six assists to lead CNU. Craig McCargo tallied 11 points and Conley Taylor contributed with 14 points. LC outrebounded CNU 37-31 and made 13 threes compared to CNU’s five.

Lynchburg (2-5) will return to the court on Wednesday, January 9, at 7 p.m in Ashland, VA, to face the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference clash.
