Assistant Coach Chad Clark Taken in MLL Draft Chicago takes UDel's Smith with First Pick
The Chicago Machine selected Rob Smith with the number one overall pick in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) supplemental draft Wednesday. Smith, a standout defenseman from the University of Delaware, helped the Blue Hens reach the NCAA Division I semifinals in 2007.
"Rob is a big time player," said Chicago head coach John Combs. "He is an outstanding athlete and someone we feel can make an impact for us on defense."
The Machine also grabbed Steve Looney in the third round with the 21st overall selection. Looney, a midfielder, is a graduate of the NavalAcademy and the older brother of current Chicago midfielder Billy Looney. In the fourth round Chicago added Colin Achenbach of C.W. Post, then chose Matthew Starker of Villanova with its fifth-round pick.
Chicago rounded out its draft with Chad Clark of Lynchburg (sixth round), Kevin Kelley of SyracuseUniversity (seventh round) and Pat Hogan, also of Syracuse.
