Sports Hall of Fame


The Lynchburg College Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1978. Induction honors outstanding athletes for their athletic performance, leadership and team contributions while students at Lynchburg College. (In 1975, the men's athletics competition, and in 1981, women's athletics competition, began in the Division 3 of NCAA. Prior to those years, competition was with colleges and universities.)



Each year the Lynchburg College Alumni Association, through its Board of Directors, appoints a committee to review nominations for the Sports Hall of Fame. Any alumnus/a or friend of the college may make nominations for this award. The nominees should meet the following criteria in order to be considered for the honor.



Eligibility Requirements


The nominee shall:

1. Have been a full-time student at Lynchburg College for at least two years and

2. Have been a letter-winner in at least one varsity sport at the college and

3. At least ten years shall have elapsed since graduation (or Lynchburg College attendance) before the individual is considered for the award.

4. Current Alumni Board, alumni faculty and staff members are eligible.



Criteria for Selection:

1. Athletic performance, leadership, team contributions and/or achievement as evidenced by:

*Postseason honors, such as All-American, All-State, etc.

*Holding position of team captain

*Record-setting performances

*Winning individual championships

*Achievements in Athletics following Lynchburg College



Other:

1. This honor may be posthumously bestowed.




Anyone interested in nominating an alumnus/a for this honor should submit his/her nomination in writing no later than January 1 of each calendar year.

Guidelines for the Sports Hall of Fame


Eligibility Requirements:

1. Have been a full-time student at Lynchburg college for at least two years and

2. Have been a letter-winner in at least one varsity sport at Lynchburg College.

3. At least ten years shall have elapsed after graduation (or Lynchburg College attendance) before a person shall be eligible for induction.

4. Current Alumni Board, alumni faculty and staff members are eligible.



Criteria for selection:


1. Athletic performance, team contributions, achievement and/or leadership in sports competition as evidenced by:


A. Post-season honors, such as All-American, All-State, etc.

B. Holding the position of team captain

C. Record-setting performances

D. Winning individual championships

E. Athletic Achievement after Lynchburg College



Nominations:


1. Nominations will be solicited in the Lynchburg College Magazine



Other:


1. This honor may be posthumously bestowed.



Categories of Membership:


1. Regular - Meets eligibility requirements and satisfies 1A, 1B, 1C, or 1D criteria.


2. Special citation - At the discretion of the selection committee.


A. To honor individuals who have substantially enhanced the athletic program at Lynchburg College.




Membership:


1. Number of Members -

The committee will solicit nominations through the Lynchburg College Magazine



2. Selection -

The presently constituted committee will select the members.





3. Timetable -

The committee will solicit nominations by January 1, for induction at Westover Alumni Society Weekend (formerly Pioneer Weekend) or Homecoming.




Annual Induction of Members:


1. Number -

            The committee recommends that no more than five individuals be inducted annually.



2. Selection committee-

A continuing selection committee should be appointed by the Alumni Association President, to serve staggered three-year terms. The committee will be made up of Alumni Board Members and should include at least one member from the Westover Alumni Society and one from each successive decade and three coaches from the athletic staff. The Sports Information Director and the Athletic Director will serve as Ex-Officio non-voting members.


The selection committee shall meet at least once prior to submitting the names of the

inductee(s) to the Alumni Board of Directors.


Public announcement of the inductee(s) shall be made prior to the induction ceremony.



3. Timetable -

There is a nomination deadline of January 1 for fall induction.


Awards can be presented at Westover Alumni Society Weekend or Homecoming.



4. Awards Ceremony -

The committee recommends a special recognition ceremony, perhaps a banquet, either  on

Friday or Saturday of Westover Alumni Society Weekend (formerly Pioneer Weekend) or Homecoming Weekend. All current Sports Hall of Fame members and their families shall be invited. Attending members will be acknowledged at the recognition ceremony and at half-time activities of the men's soccer game.





Nature of the Award:


1. Individual Awards -

The committee recommends a certificate or citation describing the achievements of the

honoree.



2. Display of Award -

Plaque with inductee's names and class years on display in lobby of Turner Gym.



3. Location of Permanent Display -

Lobby (upstairs) of Turner Gym.
