Averett Men Defeat Lynchburg 84-70  

LYNCHBURG, VA – Five players scored in double figures for Averett University to lead the Cougars to an 84-70 win over the Lynchburg College men’s basketball team in a non-conference game Wednesday. 

        Senior Evan Fancourt (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) scored 11 of the first 13 points for Lynchburg and finished with 21 points to lead the Hornets.  Eric Burnett (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle) tallied 11 points and five rebounds, and Jeff Langrock (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) posted nine points and five boards for Lynchburg.  Freshman forward Andrew Griffin (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) scored eight points, collected six rebounds, and went coast-to-coast for a layup after collecting a steal.  Kwame Safo (Vienna, VA/George C. Marshall) had a game-high eight assists and five steals.

        Averett (2-2) was led by Jonathan Rumley who tallied 21 points, five assists, four rebounds, and three steals.  Ryan Frazier dropped 18 points on six three pointers along with five assists, and Damien Brown had 10 points and seven caroms.  Cory McDaniel scored 15 points and corralled four rebounds and five steals while Brandon Malone had 11 points and four assists.

        Averett shot 50.8% of the field and 36.7% from the three with 11 made threes.  Lynchburg finished at a 40.4% clip and 37% from three with 10 made three pointers.  Lynchburg out-rebounded the Cougars 36-33 while Averett won the turnover battle 22-17.  Lynchburg was 14-21 from the charity stripe and Averett was 9-12.

        Lynchburg (0-3) will host the Guilford College Quakers Saturday at 3 p.m. in each team’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener.
