Win Great Ships Invitational – Dana Esposito Named MVP

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Freshman Kylie Lucas (Verona, VA/Fort Defiance) posted a game-high 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds Saturday afternoon to lead the Lynchburg College women’s basketball team to a 69-53 win over Newport News Apprentice School. The win gave LC the 2007 Great Ships Invitational Title, and sophomore Dana Esposito (New Port Richie, FL/Holy Names) was named the tournament’s MVP.

The Hornets came out strong in the first half, opening a 19-8 lead in the first eight minutes and cruising to a 40-22 advantage at intermission. The Builders cut the lead to just seven with 7:37 left in the game, but an 11-3 LC spurt built the lead to 15 points.

Lucas made eight of her 15 field-goal attempts en route to her game-high point total and a spot on the all-tournament team. Esposito scored 12 points, and added seven assists and four steals, while Kristina Darby (Tampa, FL/Holy Names) added 10 points. Brittany Dahn (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) tallied eight points and nine caroms, and Amy Terry (Dublin, VA/Pulaski Co.) had eight points, hitting two three-pointers.

Tyechia Cooke netted a team-high 13 points with nine boards for Apprentice (1-1). Tyisha Battle was 6-6 from the floor and finished with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds and Natasha Jones scored 10 points.

The Hornets (2-0) will host Southern Virginia University Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Turner Gym.
