Karey Richardson Scores in Double OT to Give LC Women a 2-1 Win over Emory
Will Face TCNJ in Elite Eight Sunday at 1 p.m.

Box Score

Game-winning goal      LYNCHBURG, VA – Senior forward Karey Richardson (Herndon, VA/Herndon) fired a loose ball over the keeper’s head with 7:42 left in the second overtime period to give the Lynchburg College women’s soccer team a 2-1 win over Emory University (GA) Saturday in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament sectionals. The Hornets will face The College of New Jersey Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Elite Eight for the right to advance into the final four.

The contest was scoreless at halftime and the first 15 minutes of the second half, until LC freshman Betsy Kwiatkowski (Mount Jackson, VA/Stonewall Jackson) drove a shot past an Eagle defender at the 60:06 mark to put the Hornets up 1-0.

Emory pressured on the offensive end eight minutes later, and forced an LC own goal at 67:59 in regulation or the first 10-minute overtime period - although a golden Emory opportunity was headed out of the net area by sophomore Katelyn LeRiche (Guilford, CT/Guilford) in the first overtime to save the game.

Following an Eagle save, Richardson took advantage of the goalie being out of the net and lofted the game-winning goal over two Emory players from 25 yards out.

Lynchburg out-shot Emory 11-9 and had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Emily Fedeles made four stops for the Eagles (16-2-2), while Jackie Bader (Fort Washington, MD/Bishop Ireton) made four saves.

The Hornets (19-3-3) advance to the Elite Eight for the second time in program history, and look for their first Final Four showing on Sunday. Sectional final opponent The College of New Jersey (20-0-1) defeated Washington University (MO) 1-0 earlier in the day to reach the sectional finals.
