Hornet Women’s Soccer Defeats Maryville 1-0 in NCAA Tourney
Will Face Roanoke Sunday at 6 p.m.
SALEM, VA – Senior Emily Sledd (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) scored midway through the second half Saturday night to give the Lynchburg College women’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Maryville College (TN) in a first-round game in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, hosted by Roanoke College.
Sledd redirected a shot from Audrea Hamby (Lutherville, MD/Towson) into the net with 29:38 left in the second half for the game’s only score. The Hornets out shot Maryville 9-3 in the first half, but Lindsay York made five first-half saves for the Fighting Scots to keep the contest scoreless.
The Hornets (17-3-3) out shot Maryville 23-8 and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Maryville falls to 17-5-1 on the season – and York made nine saves for the Fighting Scots.
Roanoke defeated Methodist College 3-1 in the site’s other first-round game. LC and Roanoke will square off Sunday at 6 p.m. for the right to advance into the NCAA Sweet 16.
