Two Hornet Runners Advance to Nationals
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Two Lynchburg College athletes qualified for national competition Saturday as the men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the South/Southeast Regional at Christopher Newport University.
Sophomore Ricky Flynn (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) competed despite a broken collarbone and finished eighth overall in the men’s field. He finished in 26:19 to qualify for national competition and earn All-Region honors. Pat Jacobs (Bloomingdale, NJ/Butler) was 44th in 27:49, Jeremy Falke (Ashland, VA/Patrick Henry) took 49th in 26:52, Richard Apgar (Somers, NY/Somers) was 56th in 28:02, Brian Clapp (Smithfield, VA/Denbigh Baptist) finished 74th in 28:32 and Kevin Peggs (Richmond, VA/Monacan) placed 95th in 29:16. The Hornets finished eighth as a team, and Rhodes College took home the team title.
For the LC women, freshman Jennie Pernisi (Camden, NY/APW) placed 12th overall in 23:50 to earn all-region honors and earn a trip to nationals. Ashley Meyer (Springfield, MO/Glendale) placed 15th overall in 24:10, Molly Galloway (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) was 45th in 25:25, Lindsay Fender (Fork Union, VA/Fluvanna) took 55th in 25:40 and Megan Donnelly (McLean, VA/McLean) placed 63rd in 26:01. Emory University won the women’s team competition, while LC took sixth.
Flynn and Pernisi both will compete Saturday at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN at the Division III Cross Country Nationals.
